Quilt Exhibition at the Ross  Art Museum
The museum will showcase fine art quilts from 28 artists representing 16 states, Canada, and Belgium. "The Quilted Surface IV" will be displayed in conjunction with the Quilt Surface Design Symposium, scheduled for June 14 through June 27 in Columbus. Receptions for the quilt artisans will be held at the Ross Art Museum from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. June 19 and June 25. The public is invited to attend these free receptions to meet the exhibitors and discuss their work.
"Quilting as a fine art really exploded in the 1970s," said Tammy Wallace, first assistant at the museum and one of the curators for the upcoming quilt show. "Although both men and women create fine art quilts today, women embraced the medium first. For many, it was a way to make an artistic statement even if they weren't comfortable with painting or drawing." Wallace anticipates as many as 50 fine art quilts will be displayed, incorporating a variety of hand-dyed, hand-painted, screen-printed, and discharge-dyed fabrics.
The exhibit will be on display at the Ross Museum in partnership with the Quilt Surface Design Symposium, LLC. The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
